Overview

Filament is basically a string of material or 'ink' for 3DPrinting. It's usually plastic, although there are some metallic and composite filaments.

Common 3D Printing Filament Materials

There are a variety of filaments:

PLA:

  • Plant derived
  • Easy to print with
  • Biodegradable
  • Not good for outdoors

TPU:

  • Flexible

ABS:

  • Strong
  • Toxic
  • Temperature Sensitive (requires enclosure)
  • Can be used outdoors

PETG:

  • Strong
  • Easier to print than ABS
  • Can be used outdoors

Nylon:

  • Very Strong
  • Prints at high temperature (240-260C--should be printed with all-metal hot end)
  • Very hydroscopic (can absorb more than 10% of its weight in less than 24 hours if not stored properly).
  • Warps like ABS
  • PVA-based glue on heated bed surface works best (@75C).

Others:

  • Composites
  • Additives like iron, wood, wax, conductive materials, carbon fiber, etc.
